Forward
Despite my initial trepidation about starting a blog and my early lack of confidence that I would stick with it, I am sitting here typing the 4th (actual) blog post in as many weeks. I’m not so sure that this isn’t just me shouting information into the digital ether but for anyone who is actually reading this I hope you have some ROI for your time spent.
These first 4 are likely an outlier in regards to structure. Due to amount of information, I felt this particular topic was best served in pieces for the sake of a more readable blog. Moving forward I intend to stick with a more single serving format. It is my intent that this becomes a place where people can come on their own time and find something that motivates in addition to improving their quality of life through better living.
With that I will get to the final section of this blog. I hope that what you have found here has been useful or even changed your perspective on the industry. Thank you again for reading and as always if you have any feedback please let us know. Now, onto SAFETY!!
Part 4: Safety

When talking to any patient who is new to chiropractic care, almost certainly the first thing I hear when asked why they’ve never tried it before, the answer almost always has to do with safety. It is understandable. A cavitation – gas “bubbling” out of a joint during a manipulation – can be unsettling. While most people have popped their knuckles before, having a joint that sits just below the ear adjusted is an entirely different sensation and sound.
Combine that with pop culture action flicks from the 80s and 90s which had icons like Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Van Damme snapping the necks of henchmen in every other scene, it becomes easy to see how these types of treatments can be a little scary.
Fortunately any time this subject has been examined diligently, research has always shown that not only is spinal manipulative therapy effective, it is also extremely safe.
In 2017, the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded “spinal manipulative therapy was associated with improvements in pain and function with only transient minor musculoskeletal harms.” (179)
Two years earlier Spine, in a landmark study, found that “risk of injury to the head, neck or trunk within seven days was 76% lower among subjects with a chiropractic office visit as compared to those who saw a primary care physician.” (180)
Malpractice Claims Per Provider
One of the most important indicators of safety as it relates to a particular intervention is malpractice claims data. An analysis of the US Census Bureau and the National Practitioner Data Bank, Adverse Actions and Medical Malpractice Reports (1990-2017) defined the percentage of US malpractice claims by various provider types (181) and found some interesting results:

Malpractice Premium Costs Per Provider
A secondary metric for determining safety by intervention is premium costs per provider (i.e. the cost of insuring a provider). Separate analysis by Medscape in 2019 and NCMIC (the largest malpractice insurer for chiropractors in the US) in 2021 illustrate that chiropractors pay some of the lowest malpractice rates in healthcare (182, 183):

Conclusion
Despite perceived danger in relation to the core treatment of chiropractic therapy, the most recent research shows that chiropractic is a safe and effective conservative therapy. Any time treatment is administered to a patient, there are almost always risks. Breakdown air time for almost any prescription drug commercial and you will find a large portion is set aside just to list side effects. Chiropractic is not free of risk but by comparison to most other medical interventions, the risk is extremely low.
Combining this information with the previously covered topics (parts 1-3), it is easy to see that evidence based chiropractic care is effective, inexpensive, and safe. I hope you have found this 4 part blog interesting and informative. As always, if you or anyone you know has an issue you think we may be able to help please contact the office by email [frondesk@methodchiropractic.com] or phone (816) 831-1300.
