Spinal Manipulative Therapy in Older Adults with Chronic Low Back Pain

Low back pain is one of the top three reasons adults visit a primary care provider. Unfortunately, previous studies have highlighted that many adults have pain that lasts longer than three months and is often “untreated or mismanaged.”

With various comorbidities and a higher likelihood of having more than one illness, it’s imperative to find safe and effective treatment options for this population while avoiding additional pharmaceuticals.

Exercise and movement-based care, such as spinal manipulation, have been shown to be extremely safe and effective treatment options for older adults. Not only are pain and function improved, but these gains tend to be sustained for up to 12 months or more from the onset of care.

The combination of exercise and spinal manipulation provides a powerful treatment combination. Our practice has worked with many older adults looking to overcome low back pain. If you have older adult patients with low back pain, please consider referring them for an evaluation at our practice.

“Their results suggest it (SMT) is an effective intervention for both the reduction in pain and the improvement in function, two of the core domains in LBP trials.”

“Pain and function improved by the end of treatment (SMT), and this improvement was sustained up to 12 months after randomization for all groups.”

“These findings have important implications. The recent Lancet series suggests that SMT should be considered a second treatment option, following the more commonly recommended treatments for chronic low back pain (e.g., exercise).”

We believe patients have better outcomes when their health professionals
work together.
