The pain and functional disability caused by lumbar disc herniation with nerve root compression has been well-documented over the past 25 years. However, very few papers have examined the role of sacroiliac joint (SIJ) hypo-mobility in these patients.
SIJ dysfunction is reported to be one of the primary sources of low back disorders. A hypo-mobile SIJ can create altered movement patterns that lead to piriformis spasms which can mimic radiculopathy.
Spinal manipulation has been shown to improve SIJ motion and modulate the somatosensory system, which has been shown to provide clinical value for those dealing with disc issues and SIJ dysfunction.
In our practice, we have treated countless patients who have presented with both lumbar disc disorders, as well as sacroiliac joint hypo-mobility. By taking a conservative approach with gentle spinal manipulation, active rehab, and soft tissue work, we have been able to achieve fantastic results similar to those described in this recent research study.
