The VHA (Veterans Health Administration) is the most extensive integrated healthcare system in the US, providing care to over 5.5 million veterans annually. Because of the size, scope, and integrated model, the VHA has been at the leading edge of research regarding nonpharmacological treatment for chronic pain through its network of chiropractors.
With nearly half of VHA patients experiencing chronic pain, the use of chiropractic care has skyrocketed as clinical guidelines have recommended spinal manipulation as a first-line treatment option.
One of the important takeaways from this study is that referrals from primary care providers within the VHA to chiropractors are critical to helping patients find nonpharmacological treatment, just as it is in your office.
Additionally, a subset of VHA patients have escalated opioid usage despite the guidelines. These factors showcase the importance of referral patterns for patients with chronic pain. If you have patients with chronic pain, we are happy to help them find relief without needing pharmaceuticals.
“Opioid prescribing in the VHA increased from 17 to 24% between 2001 and 2009, and was associated with opioid-related hospitalizations, overdose, and self-inflicted injuries.”
“Over 45% of VHA patients had chronic pain and 25% had high-impact chronic pain.”
“…among veterans with chronic pain, VHA patients were also more likely than non-VHA veterans to use non-pharmacological management, including chiropractic care…”

We believe patients have better outcomes when
their health professionals work together.
