Proprioceptive afferentation is considered a primary component of sensorimotor control. The abundance of mechanoreceptors in the cervical musculature provide neurophysiological input. This input is critical for optimal connections between the vestibular, visual, and central nervous systems.
Improving posture and head position can affect the afferentation process, which can decrease pain, decrease disability, and improve sensorimotor control. While posture is a dynamic balance of static position, strength, and flexibility, there is no question that improving segmental biomechanics can help people overcome many of the issues which lead to neck pain.
